Fort Aguada: History

Fort Aguada started in 1609, under construction by the Portuguese colony in the region. The building lasted for the ensuing three years and was finished in 1612 under the direction of Viceroy Ruy Tavara. Aguada means freshwater in Portuguese, and the fort takes its name from a freshwater spring on the fort grounds. It is reported that crews of sailing vessels were able to replenish their supply of fresh water from this spring.

Aguada Fort was built to protect and defend the Portuguese citadel in Goa against attacks from the Marathas and the Dutch. Because of its strategic position at the juncture of the Arabian Sea and the Mandovi River, it became the most valuable fortress the Portuguese possessed in the seventeenth century.

The fort itself is divided into two parts: the upper part, which was built to be a fort and a large watering area, and the lower part, which provided a safe berth for the possessions of the Portuguese rulers. The fort is surrounded by walls that are 5 meters high, 1.3 meters wide, with bastions surrounding the fort, having the waterway facing the Mandovi River on the fourth side.

Aguada, additionally, at the time of its heyday, was classified as the largest freshwater storage in Asia with a capacity of 2,376,000 gallons of water. There was an armory, bastions, and a moat, in addition to the largest freshwater storage of Asia, Aguada Fort was constructed with one of the more unique components of the architecture of the fort – a secret passage which was designed to allow the occupants of the fort an escape route from the fort in times of dangerous situations such as war, etc.
